About FRP

What is FRP?

FRP stands for fibre-reinforced plastic, also written fiber reinforced plastic and often called GRP or fibreglass. It's made of glass fibres set in a resin, usually polyester. The glass gives strength, the resin binds it and holds the shape, and a gelcoat on the face gives colour and protection.

How is FRP made?

Most of our products are made by hand lay-up. A mould is waxed, gelcoat is laid into it, then layers of glass-fibre mat are laid in and wetted with resin until the part is thick enough. Once cured, the part comes out of the mould and is trimmed and finished.

Is FRP strong?

For its weight, yes. FRP is strong and tough, and it doesn't rust or rot. Decorative elements such as columns, arches and cornices are shells, though, and aren't meant to carry building loads.

How long does FRP last?

FRP doesn't rust, rot or absorb water, so it lasts a long time outdoors. What weathers is the surface: over the years a gelcoat or paint can lose gloss, and it can be polished or recoated.

What's the difference between FRP and GRC?

Both use glass fibre. GRC (glass fibre reinforced concrete) is cement-based: heavier, stone-like and non-combustible. FRP is plastic-based: much lighter, smoother, and any colour. Our sister division, GRC Bangalore, makes GRC, so we can tell you which suits your project.

Is FRP fireproof?

No. FRP is combustible. Fire-retardant resins improve how it behaves in a fire. Where fire rules apply, such as facades on tall buildings, we ask for your requirements before choosing materials.

Does FRP fade in the sun?

In strong sun, colours can fade and gloss can dull over time. UV-resistant gelcoats and paints slow this down, and the surface can be restored by polishing or repainting.

Quotes and ordering

How do I get a quote?

Send us a drawing, sketch or photograph with sizes and quantities on WhatsApp or by email, and tell us where it's going and whether you need installation. You can also call to talk it through.

What details should I send?

The main sizes, the quantity, the colour or finish, the site location, and photographs of where the item goes. For tanks, add the contents, capacity and temperature. For waterproofing, add the area and photos of any leaks.

Do you make one-off pieces?

Yes. A one-off needs its own master and mould, so it costs more per piece than a repeat item. The price per piece falls as quantities rise.

How long does an order take?

It depends on whether a new mould is needed, and on size and quantity. Items from an existing mould are quicker. We'll give you a time with the quote.

Can I visit your unit?

Yes. Our unit is on Sampigehalli Main Road in Jakkur, north Bangalore. Call ahead so the right person is there to meet you.

Do you supply outside Bangalore?

Yes. Everything is made in Bangalore and we supply across South India and the rest of India. FRP is light, which keeps transport simple. For installation outside Bangalore, call us to discuss your site.

Installation and care

Do you install what you make?

Yes. Our team installs column covers, cornices, arches, facade panels, gutters and waterproofing. We can also supply only, with fixing details for your contractor.

How do I clean FRP?

Wash it with water, a mild detergent and a soft cloth or brush. Avoid abrasive cleaners and solvents, which dull the gelcoat.

Can FRP be repaired?

Yes. Chips and cracks are filled with resin and gelcoat and polished back. Larger damage is cut out and patched with new laminate.

Can FRP be painted?

Yes, with a suitable primer. Most of our products come in a coloured gelcoat, so painting is only needed to match an existing finish.
